Internationalization of higher education in Central Asia: a systematic review

ABSTRACT Despite the growing literature on higher education internationalization in Central Asia, such literature remains unexamined for its criticality. Our systematic integrative literature review helps address this lacuna. The article utilizes critical internationalization perspectives to examine the extent to which the literature on internationalization in the region addresses the critical questions currently dominating the internationalization discourse globally. We analysed 56 peer-reviewed journal articles published in English between 2012 and 2022 to address the following themes: (1) internationalization as Westernization, (2) internationalization and the modernization of the university, (3) internationalization equals Englishization and (4) internationalization and the recreation of unequal relations. We assert that the published work does not promote the reimagination of dominant patterns of relationship, representation and resource distribution. By providing a systematic review, we hope to have helped academics, researchers, students, administrators and policymakers reflect upon and reimagine internationalization practice.

How clinicians make decisions for patient management plans in telehealth.

This systematic integrative literature review explores how clinicians make decisions for patient management plans in telehealth. Telehealth is a modality of care that has gained popularity due to the development of digital technology and the COVID-19 pandemic. It is recognized that telehealth, compared to traditional clinical settings, carries a higher risk to patients due to its virtual characteristics. Even though the landscape of healthcare service is increasingly moving towards virtual systems, the decision-making process in telehealth remains not fully understood. A systematic integrative review. Databases include CINAHL, APA PsycInfo, Academic Search Complete, PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar. This systematic integrative review method was informed by Whittemore and Knafl(2005). The databases were initially searched with keywords in November 2022 and then repeated in October 2023. Thematic synthesis was conducted to analyse and synthesize the data. The search identified 382 articles. After screening, only 10 articles met the eligibility criteria and were included. Five studies were qualitative, one quantitative and four were mixed methods. Five main themes relevant to decision-making processes in telehealth were identified: characteristics of decision-making in telehealth, patient factor, clinician factor, CDSS factor and external influencing factor. The decision-making process in telehealth is a complicated cognitive process influenced by multi-faceted components, including patient factors, clinician factors, external influencing factors and technological factors. Telehealth carries higher risk and uncertainty than face-to-face encounters. CDSS, rather than bringing unification and clarity, seems to bring more divergence and ambiguity. Some of the clinical reasoning processes in telehealth remain unknown and need to be verbalized and made transparent, to prepare junior clinicians with skills to minimize risks associated with telehealth. STRATEGIES TO PROMOTE THE MENTAL HEALTH OF PATIENTS IN PALLIATIVE CARE: INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

The respective research aims to analyze national and international publications that investigate mental health promotion strategies carried out by the nursing team for patients in palliative care. It is understood that palliative care is a methodology developed to provide differentiated assistance to patients with advanced illness until the end of life, in the hospital and home environment, based on the patient-family binomial, called the hospice movement. To this end, a bibliographical research was carried out, using a qualitative descriptive approach using the techniques of systematic integrative literature review. Focusing on the results, 7 articles were selected and after analyzing the studies, the categories emerged: 1) Strategies for promoting the mental health of patients in palliative care: caring for patients, family members and workers; 2) Necessary requirements for humanized nursing care for patients in palliative care: Professional training and continuing education. The study concludes that it is extremely important that nursing professionals are equipped with skills and qualifications to develop strategies that promote the mental health of patients and their families, as well as health professionals. To achieve this, it is necessary to disseminate good practices in palliative care through humanized care with a focus on promoting the mental health of everyone involved using as strategies the insertion of empathy, solidarity, spirituality, effective communication, as well as investing in professional training and ongoing in-service education.

Barriers and facilitators to healthcare for people without documentation status: A systematic integrative literature review.

To identify the barriers and facilitators to healthcare for people without documentation status. We conducted a systematic integrative literature review following the Whittemore and Knafl methodology. Literature search was conducted to identify studies addressing barriers or facilitators to healthcare for people without documentation status in the United States between 2012 and 2022. Studies were critiqued for quality, with results analysed thematically using the social-ecological model. Searches were conducted in PubMed, PAIS, Web of Science, CINAHL and Psych Info in October 2022. The review incorporated 30 studies (19 qualitative and 11 quantitative). People without documentation status encountered numerous healthcare barriers such as intrapersonal (lack of financial resources and health insurance, fear), interpersonal (language and cultural discrepancies, discrimination), community (bureaucratic requirements, anti-immigrant rhetoric) and policy-related barriers. Conversely, linguistically and culturally competent care, empathetic and representative staff, health navigators, safety-net clinics and supportive federal policies emerged as key facilitators. These findings illuminate the complex healthcare disparities experienced by people without documentation status and underscore facilitators enhancing care accessibility. Future research is needed to explore interventions to increase access to care for this population. This paper provides a comprehensive examination of the complex barriers and facilitators to healthcare for people without documentation status in the United States. The findings support the value of universal healthcare access, a priority of the World Health Organization, and can inform healthcare policies and practices worldwide. The review was reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses framework. No patient or public contribution was needed. The study protocol was registered with the PROSPERO database (registration number: CRD42022366289).

Cultural diversity in health care teams: A systematic integrative review and research agenda.

Although team-based work is deemed key to improving the quality of national health care systems, adverse events related to teamwork account for up to one third of all incidents. Health care teams are typically multiprofessional and diverse in many aspects, but cultural diversity is one of the most challenging. The objective of this review is to systematically analyze the literature to better understand the impact of cultural diversity in health care teams on team processes as well as team and patient outcomes. This study also explores the conditions that enable or hinder team functioning. Through a systematic integrative literature review, this study builds on the input-process-output-context framework. Multiple searches of the main databases led to identifying 43 relevant articles. The results suggest that, when not proactively managed, cultural diversity may have a negative effect on team communication and integration, increasing team conflict and thereby negatively influencing team performance, team climate, and patient safety, both directly and indirectly. Yet, when managed properly and in the presence of engaged and culturally sensitive leadership, cultural training, and open and transparent procedures, cultural diversity in health care teams can be an asset to health care organizations. Analyzing and aggregating these findings into an integrative framework, our study identifies several themes and a research agenda for future studies on culturally diverse health care teams. Our findings suggest that culturally diverse health care teams experience a number of challenges, pointing to the need for action or structures that enable these teams to perform better, such as emphasizing learning and allowing team members time to get to know each other outside work.

Mental Health and Homelessness Among Youth Aging Out of Foster Care

Purpose: To identify the risk of homelessness and mental health needs of youth aging out of foster care. This integrative review aims to synthesize the literature on the health outcomes of aging out of foster care. The intent is to highlight the mental health needs and risk of homelessness in those who have aged out of foster care and to determine the role of nursing care in this population.
 Design: Systematic integrative literature review
 Methods: Integrative review methods will be used to identify the risk associated with aging out of foster care and the adverse health outcome, including mental health and homelessness. Current research, including experimental and non-experimental studies, was retrieved using OVID, MEDLINE, PubMed, and CINAL. The PRISMA guidelines' general framework will provide guidance for reviewing, structuring, reporting, and discussing the findings from the various computer database searches.
 Findings: Fifty-eight abstracts were reviewed, and twenty-five met the inclusion criteria. They were reviewed using the Joanna Briggs Institute approach for mixed methods using the PICo inclusion criteria. Both qualitative and quantitative studies were used to support the identified problem with the phenomenon of interest.
 Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: This literature review provided an in-depth understanding of adolescents aging out of foster care and their struggle with mental health issues. This synthesis of the literature offers nurses suggestions on important suggestions for important research questions and clinical care in this population.

How many hours per night is enough? A systematic integrative review to identify optimal hours of CPAP therapy use for sleep apnoea

Objective: This study aimed to synthesise current evidence about the optimal hours of use of CPAP for OSA to offer an evidence-based approach to using this therapy. Method: A systematic integrative literature review was conducted with quality assessment criteria applied. Results: 10 of 4693 studies met inclusion criteria. Thematic analysis identified three themes: 1) more is better, but anything is better than nothing; 2) six hours is optimal; 3) the percentage of total sleep time/individualised optimal hours are the best way to determine ‘compliance’ and efficacy. Hours per night in the context of total sleep time may offer a more individualised indicator of compliance than four hours per night for every user. Conclusion: Overall, this review identified limited evidence about optimal hours of CPAP use for OSA. The previously employed four hours of use as the threshold for determining compliance warrants review in the context of total sleep time per night. Additionally, patients can be encouraged that any CPAP is better than none and increasing use should yield clinical improvement. We argue that optimal hours of use are an individualised definition and that previous ideas around universally applicable optimal hours be discarded in favour of a focus on improving clinical indicators and CPAP use as a percentage of total sleep time.

Local Governance in Just Energy Transition: Towards a Community-Centric Framework

Knowledge of energy transition (ET) is evolving in developing countries. Yet, it is unclear how the transition should be managed in a way that ensures justice for local stakeholders. We synthesise the extant theoretical ideas and practices of the local governance (LG) related to ET, which are vital in ensuring justice in energy policy at the local level. The paper advances this development by a systematic integrative literature review (N = 569) from the Web of Science (WoS) and highly cited grey literature linked to participation, LG, and ET. The bibliometric analysis indicates that, while the literature on energy justice is growing, limited attention has been paid to LG in just energy transition (N = 36). The analysis further indicates that more than half of the scientific literature is produced by five countries from the global North alone. In-depth scrutiny of highly cited studies and grey literature in LG and ET underlines the lack of a generalised framework of local ET governance, especially in the global South. We address this gap and propose a framework that exhibits a community-centric LG, which is essential for just energy transition.

SME resilience as a catalyst for tourism destinations: a literature review

This study proposes a holistic framework, which synthesized the literature on resilience, tourism, and tourism micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The dimensions of resilience were used as lens to highlight the role played by tourism small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and extract strategies for tourism destination resilience amid various disasters. The systematic integrative literature review of 107 documents covered six books and 101 papers. Seven sources are chapters from 6 books and 94 articles from 47 journals. The literature review uses thematic analysis to extract dimensional concepts from extant literature on resilience, tourism resilience, and tourism MSMEs. Key insights on limitations and strategies on resilience emerged from the review. These addressed aspects of governance, economics, environment, and social resilience. This analysis led to the formulation of a framework that underscored the dimensions of tourism. It provides insights for tourism policymakers in drafting strategies to address limitations, which anchored on a more comprehensive perspective. As a contribution to theory, this study expanded the scope of resilience dimensions to address limitations. The strategies intend to fortify MSME resilience as a dominant part of tourism resilience. The insights from the study offer an enhanced view of tourism MSME resilience as crisis and disaster management literature.

The experience of diagnosis, decision-making and management of Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD) is complex and taxing for families and clinicians. We systematically reviewed evidence relating to the family and healthcare provider experience of CCHD diagnosis and its management.

Towards a theoretical framework for gendered energy transition at the urban household level: A case of Mozambique

The demand of urban environments for charcoal and fuelwood is responsible for the unprecedented forest degradation in Mozambique. Not surprisingly, solid fuels comprise the bulk of the energy demand in the country, and a marginal number of urban households use clean energy sources for cooking. Evidence shows that biomass consumption has a disproportional effect on women. Their needs are often overlooked when policies are designed, and they are yet to benefit fully from the outcomes of these policies. Through a systematic integrative literature review of 154 sources, this paper shows that the existing energy transitional frameworks are arguably circumscribed by the Global North where access to modern energy sources is no longer the subject of debate. Instead, the energy transition debates are driven mainly by the climate change paradox. This paper develops arguments for a theoretical framework for gendered energy transition, focusing on developing economies. By exploring the Mozambican context, a localised energy system assessment was performed followed by an analysis of the gender role and the factors that drive fuel choice decisions within urban households. The main finding is that the existing frameworks lack a gender perspective and a theoretical framework to address solid fuels dependence in urban environments. Building on the current literature, we illustrate a potential framework for gendered energy transition using an example of the use of liquified petroleum gas and electricity. The critical recommendation is that debates on the gender-energy nexus require assertion of the efficacy of the existing transition frameworks through gender audit research.

Urban regeneration in the light of social innovation: A systematic integrative literature review

The growth of the urban population has generated unequal access to basic infrastructure and creates heterogeneous spaces in the urban fabric. In this sense, it is necessary to rethink the use of land with alternatives to promote the adequate use of these urban spaces. Urban regeneration (UR) is a construct aimed at studying the use of urban spaces, and social innovation seeks to develop innovative solutions to social problems. Thus, this article aims to analyze characteristics of social innovation that can contribute to urban regeneration. For that, an integrative systematic literature review was used, in the databases Scopus, Web of Science, Scielo, and Portal de Periódicos Capes. As a result, nine characteristics of social innovation stand out that contribute to urban regeneration projects to achieve more inclusive and sustainable results: networks, social relations, collaboration, social cohesion, satisfaction of human needs, improvements in quality of life, empowerment, sustainability, and scalability. The research contributes to broadening the discussion on urban regeneration with differentiated approaches, in addition to contributing to urban managers, society, cities, and organizations.

Knowledge management in family business succession: current trends and future directions

PurposeThis paper aims to review the literature on knowledge management in the family business, addressing the research question as follows: “How is knowledge managed across generations in the family business?” This study synthesizes the literature, highlighting the role of multiple stakeholders who affect knowledge management along with the phases of the succession process. Stemming from these findings and embracing a practice-based view, this paper offers research directions to guide future contributions on knowledge construction in the family business. The purpose of this study is not only to conclude the previous research but also to provide insights for future research directions and to provide practical implications.Design/methodology/approachThrough a systematic integrative literature review, this paper collects map and analytically examine 63 published peer-reviewed articles related to knowledge management in the family business from 39 academic journals. This paper applies a rigorous approach to identify the sample of articles, map descriptive information of the reviewed literature and map theoretical contributions according to a multi-stakeholder and multi-stage framework.FindingsThe sampled articles are analyzed according to a multi-stakeholder and multi-stage framework inspired by Daspit et al. (2016). This study identifies critical gaps emerging from the analysis, thus opening the way to future research directions. In particular, this paper prompts scholars to advance the understanding of family-related knowledge and to clarify the assumptions on knowledge in their research.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper contributes to the debate on knowledge management in the family business, by systematizing the current literature. In addition, this study embraces a “knowledge from practice perspective” and offers research directions to guide future contributions on knowledge construction in family business succession and potential areas to further management research investigating the role of family-related knowledge. Practical implications are also provided to benefit family businesses, consultants and policymakers.Originality/valueThis study provides a systematic integrative literature review of the articles published on knowledge management in family business according to a multi-stakeholder and multi-stage framework. Moreover, it draws an agenda for future research advancing a “knowledge from a practice perspective” in the family business literature.

Opioid epidemic and prescribing in hospice and palliative care: a review of the literature.

Rising rates of opioid abuse worldwide have led to the implementation of policies to curb opioid prescribing. It is unknown what impact these policies have on prescribing within the setting of hospice and palliative care. To determine the current state of the science of opioid prescribing in hospice and palliative care in relation to the opioid epidemic and associated policies. A systematic integrative literature review was conducted using the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, ProQuest Central and SCOPUS. Most of the existing literature examines physician perspectives related to opioid prescribing in primary care settings. Ample evidence exists that policies can and do affect rates of opioid prescribing in specialties outside of hospice and palliative care. There is limited evidence to suggest how these policies affect opioid prescribing in hospice and palliative care. However, the available evidence suggests that opioids are necessary in hospice and palliative care in order to manage pain. Further research is necessary to examine the possible negative impact of the opioid epidemic on opioid prescribing in hospice and palliative care.

Training needs assessment: tool utilization and global impact

BackgroundGlobal demand for standardized assessment of training needs and evaluation of professional continuing education programs across the healthcare workforce has led to various instrumentation efforts. The Hennessy-Hicks Training Needs Analysis (TNA) questionnaire is one of the most widely used validated tools. Endorsed by the World Health Organization, the tool informs the creation of tailored training to meet professional development needs. The purpose of this project was to describe TNA tool utilization across the globe and critically appraise the evidence of its impact in continuous professional development across disciplines and settings.MethodsA systematic integrative literature review of the state of the evidence across PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and Google Scholar databases was carried out. Full-text, peer reviewed articles and published dissertations/theses in English language that utilized the original, adapted or translated version of the TNA tool were included. Selected articles were appraised for type and level of evidence.ResultsA total of 33 articles were synthesized using an inductive thematic approach, which revealed three overarching themes: individual, team/interprofessional, and organizational level training needs. Included articles represented 18 countries, with more than two thirds involving high-income countries, and one third middle-income countries. Four studies (12.1%) used the original English version instrument, 23 (69.7%) adapted the original version, and 6 (18.2%) translated and culturally adapted the tool. Twenty-three studies targeted needs at the individual level and utilized TNA to determine job roles and responsibilities. Thirteen articles represented the team/interprofessional theme, applying the TNA tool to compare training needs and perceptions among professional groups. Last, three articles used the tool to monitor the quality of care across an institution or healthcare system, demonstrating the organizational training needs theme.ConclusionsOverall evidence shows that the TNA survey is widely used as a clinical practice and educational quality improvement tool across continents. Translation, cultural adaptation, and psychometric testing within a variety of settings, populations, and countries consistently reveals training gaps and outcomes of targeted continuous professional development. Furthermore, it facilitates prioritization and allocation of limited educational resources based on the identified training needs. The TNA tool effectively addresses the “know-do” gap in global human resources for health by translating knowledge into action.

Customer knowledge management and smart tourism destinations: a framework for the smart management of the tourist experience – SMARTUR

Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate how customer knowledge management (CKM) can assist destination management organizations (DMOs) in the smart management of the tourist experience to contribute to the creation of smart solutions and the promotion of smart tourism destinations (STDs). To accomplish it, a CKM conceptual framework aligned with smart tourism and composed of eight processes is developed to guide managers in this management. Design/methodology/approach This research adopts the design science research methodology and applies its steps. It was supported by a systematic integrative literature review on CKM models and frameworks and their main elements, as well as by semi-structured interviews with tourism specialists in the context of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Findings From the literature it appears that tourist experiences are customer knowledge essential to the improvement and innovation of tourism products and services, and that CKM, still little explored in this scenario, tends to contribute to the management of this crucial knowledge for smart tourism. The analyses and improvements to the structure developed by specialists show its applicability and contributions to the management of STD experiences. Originality/value This paper offers an original contribution to the integration of the theoretical constructs of CKM, tourist experience and STDs by showing how the CKM, from tourism experiences, technologies and social networks, can assist DMOs in the management of experiences and promotion of STDs.

The role of IT in innovation at the individual and group level – a literature review

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review and integrate cross-disciplinary research on the role of information technology (IT) on innovation published in the past 10 years. Design/methodology/approach The study follows the recommendations for systematic integrative literature review. The authors focus on the manuscripts published in the period between 2009 and 2018 in the top 8 Information Systems journals. Further, the authors specifically focus on the studies conducted at the individual and/or group level of analysis. Findings First, the authors find that there has been relatively little research published focusing on the role of IT in innovation at the individual and/or group level of analysis. Among the published studies the authors find equivocal insights on the role of IT in innovation. While IT can support innovation, it can also cause technostress and become an impeding element by institutionalizing established organizational practices. Originality/value Despite the importance of the topic, there has been little research on the role of IT in supporting innovation published in the small-and medium-size enterprise development journals. Through cross-disciplinary integration, the authors’ provide a foundation for future research on the topic.

Unregulated health care workers in the care of aging populations: Similarities and differences between Brazil and Canada

Introduction The world’s population is rapidly aging. Unregulated health care workers (UHCWs) are emerging as a potentially important workforce in the care of older adults. Objective A review was conducted to identify the activities of UHCWs with respect to contributions and limitations. Methods A systematic integrative literature review was conducted using online databases (LILACS, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and grey literature). The inclusion criteria were as follows: (i) description of UHCW activities related to older adults; and (ii) description of UHCW activities performed in Brazil or Canada. Results Eleven papers were included in this review. In both countries, UHCW activities included health promotion, mental health care, and rehabilitation. In Brazil, UHCWs performed integrated care, while in Canada UHCWs performed personal care and housekeeping. Conclusion These results highlight the potential and limits of UHCWs who provide care for the aging population. Such information is important to health and social policy making and household decision making.

Systematic Design of Modular Service Architectures for Complex Service Systems

The principle of modularity has become more and more important for designing modular service systems. During the last years, a number of modularization methods have been proposed and applied to services. In order to systematize and compare these methods, we conducted a systematic integrative literature review. We identified 12 methods published between 1998 and 2013 and developed a set of eight criteria for the subsequent analysis. The results of this analysis indicate that the major part of these methods focuses on analysis and design tasks during the development of modular service architectures. Subsequently, we propose a framework for service modularization that consists of four phases: framework calibration, analysis, module design and architecture design. This framework especially focuses on the systematization of the tasks to be conducted during the analysis of a service system and the design of a modular service architecture. We argue that an iterative refinement and a continual validation of the constituent elements and their interdependencies during the whole modularization process with experts from different domains are indispensable. Finally, we discuss our proposition in relation to existing modularization methods as well as regarding its strengths and limitations.
